Roura Salting Factory

It was only in operation for barely half a century. It was built by Pablo Roura (based in Portosín) in 1871.

Although he had previously purchased the property verbally, the formal deed of sale was not signed until 15 August 1871.

The name Cabanas reportedly comes from the fact that before the salting factory was built, fishermen's huts or "cabins" stood on this site.

The Cabanas factory operated until 1936, and later had a second period of activity, from 1939 to 1945, run by Jesús Carreró, an industrialist who later bought another salting factory in Somorto, Esteiro.

The most striking features are the two piers, built with large stone blocks, where the boats bringing fish — primarily sardine — for the factory would unload.

There is very little information about their construction, but it is clear that they were built at different times.

The outer pier is formed by large stones and its greater depth suggests it was likely used for docking galleons and sloops.
