Xosé Agrelo Hermo (1937–2006)

Born in Noia, he studied at the Seminary of Santiago and abandoned his studies on the verge of ordination as a priest.

A schoolteacher by profession, he taught in Boiro, Outes, Torea, Esteiro and at the IES As Insuas in Muros, where he served as headmaster.

A recognised writer, he is the author of numerous works, among which the following stand out: "O Espantallo" (Premio Facho, 1971); the theatrical pieces: "Noite de Lobos", "Metá e Metá", "O Mestre"; narrative works such as "O Xogo Dramático" (co-, for and about children), "Candea 70", "A Freguesía de Santa Cristina de Barro", "A Freguesía de Santa Mariña de Esteiro", "Avilés de Taramancos", "Cantiga da Costureira Poeta", "María Mariño", "Derrota e Singraduras do Joaquín Vieta, Noia", "Porto de Compostela", "O Cartafol de Ruperta"; the novel "Os Sete Coitelos" and the adventure story "Rumbo ao Maluco".

A cultural activist with a great theatrical vocation, he founded and led theatrical groups: Talía de Noia (1962–66), Candea de Noia (1973–80), Agrocovo (children's theatre at the Esteiro School, 1975–98), Xestruco de Esteiro (1982–86), and O Xeito de Esteiro (2004).

Editor-in-chief of the magazine Barbanza (1988–90), director of the magazine A Motora (1993), member of the editorial board of the magazine Alameda, and director of publications at Editorial Toxosoutos.

A Galician nationalist politician, he stood as a candidate for the Senate for the BN-PG in 1977 and for Congress in 1979, and served as a councillor in Muros for the BNG from 1979 to 1987.

Buried in Barro (Noia), his home parish.
