Monte Louro and Xalfas Lagoon

They form the most important Natural Space in the municipality of Muros, both for their ecological and landscape values. This is a coastal complex presenting a great variety of ecosystems and habitats of unquestionable value, where such diverse zones as mountains and coastal cliffs, beaches and dunes, lagoon, marine area, riparian woodland, etc. coincide.

Monte Louro, by its morphology, represents an "inselberg" or island mountain, marking the boundary between the ría and the open sea. It was also included in the National Inventory of Points of Geological Interest (PIX9) by the Institute of Geology and Mining of Spain, published in the 1980s, based on the singularity of its geomorphology, constituting a notable educational resource and a reference in environmental geology.

It has two clearly defined peaks, of 226 and 244 metres, known respectively as the Magdalena peak and the Garita peak.

On the peak known as the "Magdalena", the remains of a small hermitage dedicated to the Magdalene are preserved; in fact, on the 1634 map of the Ría de Muros e Noia by Portuguese cartographer Pedro Teixeira, the chapel of the Magdalene is marked on Monte Louro. Near the chapel were the so-called "Hortas da Madalena" (Magdalene's gardens), which according to oral tradition people who had made an offering would cultivate potatoes to hand over to the church. To this day, the Romería de la Magdalena, celebrated on 22 July, remains of great importance.

The highest peak is known as the Garita peak, as it was the location of the Fuerte de Monte Louro, a fortification built in 1520 by order of Archbishop D. Alonso III de Fonseca to defend the cove of Louro from pirate and invader attacks. Today only the remains of what was once one of the most important defensive points of Muros survive.

Also on Monte Louro, huts can be seen where livestock was kept, some even equipped so that shepherds could spend the night watching over the flock. Near these small structures, the ruts left by carts on their way to work the lands surrounding the lagoon can still be seen on the ground.

At the foot of Monte Louro lies the Laguna de Xalfas, separated from the open sea by a well-preserved dune system.
